Embracing Nature in Umbria: The Case Against Air Conditioning for Yoga Retreats at Tara Nature Retreat, Italy

In July and August, many Romans seek to escape the urban heat. Just as the rulers of India use to escape to the foothills of the Himalayas, so to do Romans flock to the foothills of the Apennines of Umbria.

Moreover, the beaches can be crowded on these months. If you're seeking peace and solitude, the beaches are not for you.

Tara Nature Retreat is a natural refuge from summer heat and is typically around 5°C cooler than cities such as Rome and Florence. We chose this location intentionally - a secluded hilltop setting at 400 m above sea level, surrounded by oak forest - because it is noticeably cooler, breezier, and removed from the intensity of summer heat.

During the hottest months, many Italians leave the cities and the crowded beaches to seek relief in the quiet hills of Umbria. That same tradition of escaping to nature continues here. The elevation, shade, and steady airflow create a naturally comfortable environment, and our 3-meter-deep swimming pool offers a refreshing place to cool off.

With thick stone walls and a fan in every room, Tara House remains comfortable even on rare days above 35°C. We have chosen not to install air conditioning — it is rarely desired, and avoiding it allows us to reduce the environmental impact of the retreats we host while maintaining a more natural atmosphere.

That's all for now - we enjoy warm summers without air conditioning and we live in a hilltop paradise that is fine without it. Please avoid urban heat islands and crowded beaches and come see for yourself.
